CO & OR Congressional Reps to Introduce Federal Marijuana Regulation Bill

The AP is reporting that Democratic Representatives from Colorado & Oregon will be introducing legislation tomorrow to regulate cannabis in states that choose to legalize marijuana.
Regulatory oversight would be vested with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, rather than the Drug Enforcement Agency. The proposed legislation would also legalize industrial hemp production.
The Bureau of ATF would be renamed the Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana & Firearms.
If passed, this bill would create an excise tax for cultivators and a regulatory scheme for producers and vendors; while it has little chance of passing, it is a giant step in the right direction.
Targeting the tax code, Reps. Blumenauer (OR-3) and Polis (CO-2) hope to garner support from conservatives and liberals alike.
Legislation will be proposed the same day California’s Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments in City of Riverside v. Inland Empire Patient’s Health and Wellness Center.
The case’s outcome will determine, hopefully once and for all, whether cities and counties in the State of California can ban Medical Cannabis Dispensing Collectives.
The Court has also agreed to review 4 other cases regarding the same topic.
Advocates across the country will have one eye on DC and one eye on California tomorrow.
