Endocannabinoid System – Vital Role In Human Body

Endocannabinoid System

Science has found two cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2 (so far) as part of our ‘receptor’ category within the human endocannabinoid system but with further research we’ll soon begin to understand much more about this system (internal compounds much like marijuana). This system also includes degradation, synthesis, and transport.  Some of these compounds date back roughly 600 million years and can be found in hundreds of life forms and it is through these life forms that this system evolved with us.

The endocannabinoid system acts as a regulator, constantly attempting to bring our bodies back to equilibrium. Our endocannabinoid system helps us maintain homeostasis, control basic processes like glucose metabolism and other metabolic processes, and “regulate intercellular communication, especially within the immune and nervous systems,” according to Harm Reduction Journal.

In General, cannabinoids modulate and coordinate tissues, organ, and body systems, including cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, excretory, musculo-skeletal, reproductive, and respiratory systems.  The effects of cannabinoids on consciousness are not well understood, but are well known, and underlie the popular recreational use of the plant.  These effects also have therapeutic possibilities.
