RALEIGH, N.C. –Legislation will formally be introduced Monday night to legalize medical marijuana in North Carolina.

H577 is sponsored by Rep. Kelly Alexander, D-Mecklenburg; Rep. Patsy Keever, D-Buncombe and Rep. Pricey Harrison, D-Guilford.

The bill was filed last week to allow and tax the use of medical marijuana.  Supporters of the bill say medical marijuana can help people who suffer from certain debilitating conditions.  They also say research has proven that the drug can be used to alleviate pain, nausea and other symptoms.

Fifteen states have already legalized the use of medical marijuana.  Supporters of H577 say legalizing the use of the drug could create about $250 million a year in revenue for North Carolina.
