Course Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction

Mental health disorders are one of the leading causes of disability in the world – 1 in 4 people will experience at least one mental health disorder in their lifetime 1. Below are some global statistics to get a sense of the prevalence of this issue:

  • Over 300 million people suffer from major depressive disorders – one-third are resistant to treatment
  • About 35 million people struggle with substance use disorders
  • 6-9% of the population suffers from PTSD
  • Of the 40 million people requiring palliative care each year, 29-50% will suffer from death-related anxiety and depression
  • Approximately 16 million people suffer from eating disorders8, and prevalence rates are spiking, rising from 3.5%to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018

Module 2: The Role of Music In Mediating Therapeutic Outcomes in Psychedelic Therapy

In psychedelic research, there is a general consensus amongst independent research groups that the effectiveness of clinical trials using psychedelics such as psilocybin is mediated by the occurrence of personally meaningful experiences during the session, including “peak-experiences” and “autobiographical insight”.

Music is a key component to all psychedelic therapies and plays an essential role in successful therapeutic outcomes. Psychedelics and music are thought to work synergistically: psychedelics enhance the subjective experience of music significantly, and music is shown to play a key role in facilitating these personally meaningful experiences.

The written content of the course was well organized and easy to follow. I was left with the feeling that I wanted to learn more.
The primary issue with the course is with the references. It isn’t possible to return to the course after each reference. This is cumbersome and time consuming. I enjoy both the written articles and the videos but would like ease of navigation so I can access as many references as I wish. Hope these references will remain available to me for some time, as it was impossible to get through all of them in a timely manner. Thank you for all your good work and for access to this information.
