Cannabis

Definition: A genus of flowering herb in the family Cannabaceae with one species: cannabis Sativa L. named after 18th century French biologist Jean Baptist Lamark. Recent DNA testing shows cannabis Sativa, cannabis Indica and cannabis Ruderalis are subspecies of cannabis Sativa L., not separate species as sometimes argued. Temperature, humidity, nutrients present in the soil, altitude and sunlight affect the plant’s appearance, chemical composition and concentration of more than 545 compounds, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, proteins, phenols and esters.
