First-pass effect

Definition: The metabolic process for cannabinoids, or any active compound, that passes through the liver before before entering the bloodstream. First-pass effect greatly reduces the active compound’s concentration and alters bioavailability compared to other delivery methods. THC is significantly metabolized by this process, which is why formulations ingested orally have less bioavailability than other delivery methods, such as sublingual or inhalation.
