Receptor downregulation

Definition: A type of metabolic tolerance. In cannabis, when neurons containing CB1 receptors are over-stimulated by THC, a homeostatic response follows in an effort to rebalance the brain, reducing the number of CB1 receptors on the surface of target cells and making the cells less sensitive to cannabinoid effects and creates the buildup of tolerance.. After THC has been metabolized and eliminated, CB1 receptors begin upregulating back to their normal level of availability.
