Terpene
Definition: In cannabis, volatile hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of the raw plant, numbering in excess of 200 varieties identified. Terpenes modify the effect of cannabinoids and contribute to the flavor and aroma with particular therapeutic properties at low levels ≪1% in the plant. There is no scientific evidence that higher dosages are helpful. Many terpenes have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. Manufacturers sometimes add terpenes to improve their flavor, taste and medicinal effects. This is fine provided they use terpenes at modest dosages that occur naturally in the plant. While the terpenes in cannabis are generally safe to consume orally, consumers should beware that artificially concentrated terpenes could produce irritating or toxic effects when smoked or vaped.
