RCW 69.51A.300 required the development of continuing education for healthcare providers based on the medical marijuana authorization practice guidelines. Medical Marijuana 411 has developed the Washington State Healthcare Provider Education: Medical Use of Marijuana online CME course and has been approved by the Washington State Boards and Commissions.
Washington State Boards and Commissions requires the Washington State Healthcare Provider Education: Medical Use of Marijuana online CME course to improve patient safety and maintain the dignity of the health professions in the state of Washington. The Board of Naturopathy, the Medical Quality Assurance Commission, the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission, and the Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery worked together to adopt shared professional practice standards expected of all healthcare practitioners who authorize medical marijuana under Washington State law.
This Medical Marijuana 411 course covers the following topic areas: Overview of Washington state laws and rules, healthcare provider authorization requirements and guidelines, medical marijuana authorization amounts, the endocannabinoid system and the pharmacology of cannabis, therapeutic rationale and dosing best practices, issues related to practice for each profession, legal issues, qualifying conditions, and treatment as required by the Washington Department of Health.
Legal Assessment
The activity is an educational overview of medical cannabis in its current legal context in the US. Currently there are 2.1 million registered medical marijuana patients and there are an estimated 3.5 million patients using medical marijuana nationwide. The constantly changing legal environment in which cannabis can be used in the United States has resulted in confusion for both physicians and patients. Currently, 33 states have legalized medical marijuana and 10 states have also legalized recreational marijuana. Due to the lack of knowledge of the legality of discussing medical marijuana, physicians, nurses and pharmacists are hesitant to discuss with their patients. The lack of communication between the patient and physician can lead to the patient self-medicating with no guidance from a medical professional.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of AffinityCE and the MM411.
