Washington state law requires all marijuana retail stores with a medical marijuana endorsement to have a certified Medical Marijuana Consultant on staff. The certification program for Washington consists of 20 hours of course work.
To be a Medical Marijuana Consultant, you must first take and pass a state Department of Health approved training program. Our program has been approved by the State of Washington Department of Health to administer the certification program.
This course is regularly updated to encompass the current legislative conditions (as of 8/2022).

MEDICAL MARIJUANA CONSULTANT RENEWALS
- Consultants will receive a renewal reminder notice from DOH six to eight weeks before the certification expires. Please keep in mind, this reminder service is a courtesy of DOH, not required for renewal.
- If you do not receive the notice within four weeks of your expiration date, please call 360-236-4700 or email customer service department.
- If you renew by mail, it will take about two weeks to update.
- If you deliver the payment in person (Tumwater Location), it will take about three to seven business days.
- Consultant certifications expire at midnight on their expiration date, which is the holder’s birthday.
- Consultants may renew their certification up to 90 days before it expires.
- To be clear, if a consultant’s certificate has not expired, they can simply click on the Medical Marijuana Consultant Renewal link under LICENSE RENEWALS to find out how to renew “with a renewal notice” or “without a renewal notice”.
CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (CE) (this is a link to the main CE website)
- The renewal notice should indicate the date the consultant will need to complete their continuing education for the following year.
- Example: The certificate may expire on 11/01/2016, but the consultant has until 11/01/2017 to complete the ten hours of continuing education (CE).
- Consultants must take 10 hours of continuing education (this link will take you to acceptable/not acceptable topics) every year. If you have questions about your continuing education, please call 360-236-4700 or email us for help.
- Please remember, continuing education hours will not be carried over from one reporting period to another. This is why it is important for consultants to pay attention to that date on their certificate.
- Also, up to 25 percent of certificate holders are randomly audited for continuing education compliance. Consultants should maintain records of continuing education completion for at least four years.
It is recommended that each person contact the department’s customer service at 360-236-4700 or by email at hsqa.csc@doh.wa.gov to see if their credential is marked for CE requirement.
If they have their contact information current with the Department of Health, they should receive a courtesy renewal notice a couple months prior expiration that indicates whether or not CE is required for renewal.You can also use the following link to search the database:

WAC 246-71-010 Definitions.
(14) “Valid photographic identification” means:
(a) A driver’s license or instruction permit issued by any state of the United States or province of Canada. If the patient’s driver’s license has expired, the patient must also show a valid temporary driver’s license with the expired card.
(b) A state identification card issued by any state of the United States or province of Canada.
(c) An official passport issued by any nation.
d) A United States armed forces identification card issued to active duty, reserve, and retired personnel and the personnel’s dependents.
(e) A merchant marine identification card issued by the United States Coast Guard.
(f) An enrollment card issued by the governing authority of a federally recognized Indian tribe located in Washington, if the enrollment card incorporates security features comparable to those implemented by the department of licensing for Washington drivers’ licenses.A recognition card, whether current or expired, does not qualify as valid photographic identification.

Medical marijuana certification applications submitted to the DOH must have:
- Proof of age (see the website for documents that are allowed)
- Proof of CPR Certification (send a copy of your certificate)
- Proof of completing a DOH Approved Consultant Training Program (send a copy of your certificate of completion)

No, we do not offer a CPR course. Please be aware that with recent rules changes that were adopted on March 12, 2018 and go into effect on April 11, 2018 (WSR 18-07-030), online CPR courses are no longer accepted as part of the certification requirements. The CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) requirements now include written and “skills demonstration”.
The state application asks for the city and state where the class was taken. We are located in Redmond, Washington

Materials were helpful to learning, Knowledge was valuable to job/professional development. Course clearly communicated objectives/concepts, generated decent enthusiasm in the subject, was well organized in content, and the delivery was conductive to learning. But, some of the bigger sections could be broken up for the sake of keeping attention and enthusiasm (looking at the legal chapters – 2a or 2b, maybe they should be 2a-2m). Also, while this course was conveniently online, 20 hours guys!? Really? Does it really take that many concentrated days to learn this stuff? This may be impossible due to legal mumjo jumbo, but is it possible to have a “Speed Course” for those of use who already know quite a bit about it? Anyway, thank you for your program and for the education that you have provided. You are appreciated.

I loved this course! I would love to see a further in depth portion on terpenes in the future. One that has an expanded list instead of just the dominant terpenes. The reason I have 4 stars in one category was because of the 24h pause if you don’t pass a test. That seems excessive. And a lot of people will plan to do it in a day they set aside for it. The goal is to insure we understand the information. The timer should only be an hour or 2. To give people time to reread it.

multiple trick questions that contradict the course materials and common sense are extremely annoying and disheartening. true/false questions are supposed to be obvious and without the partial caveat offered after you get it wrong.

I was dissapointed to find that there was a lot of repeat from the first training with no deeper dives into those topics.
The test questions were not always directly from the syllabus-poorly worded.
Some verbiage could be changed that is contradicting ( not allowed to recommend, in same chapter says make your recommendations ). There was also a couple instances where there was no content provided in a section for the question asked.
Videos were good, perhaps if the pdfs could be converted to PowerPoint or similar it would enhance the learning experience.
There were a few questions on the quizzes that asked for specific numbers or statistics that weren’t mentioned in the material seemingly. Other than that a great course.
The handbook was helpful, and had some additional information that was generally interesting.
I look forward to doing a more in-depth review of this content. Thank you very much.

24 hour wait to retry a failed test is steep. maybe try 12 hours
The course this time compared to the first time I took it 2018 was a lot better but… I would say the 24hour lock outs is WAY to much. I could see an hour maybe to review the section and take test again but 24 is to much. I know for my people (6 total) it was very annoying to give 2 full days for testing only and then to get locked out for 24 hrs thru a real wrench into the program. I know the questions I got wrong where deff trick ones and so made it very hard to complete in a timely manner-

My biggest complaint is that it was not obvious I was supposed to evaluate the course to finish. I was trying to find the lest step that was not complete and was saving the evaluation for after. Turns out the evaluation is the last step.
Putting the same ‘objective’ slide after the header of each subsection also ended up being a little inconvenient. Not a huge deal.”

I am personally appalled at the propaganda I was fed about this amazing plant when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. I am incredibly enthusiastic about helping disseminate this information, as well. It is much needed.
some questions were worded in a manner that was very confusing. for example ( can a medical consultants recommend different products?) I answered yes, thinking it meant other non medical cannabis products inside the store and that the patient was not limited to medical only products. or products that only a person with a medical card could buy. In the Sections 1-3, there were questions regarding topics that had not yet been covered in the material provided. While the questions could be considered “common knowledge” with people who are familiar with cannabis and the legality surrounding it, it is unfair from a testing standpoint to quiz people on topics that were not yet taught.

The course is well-detailed, organized, and is concise for advanced budtenders to readily understand. One part of the “Medical Marijuana Compliant products” section could use some tailoring and adjusting to be perfectly clear for us as budtenders to be empowered with the accurate knowledge for legal possession limits in regards to medical and recreational sales. There was a box displaying 6 purchased and 8 grown ounces for the legal possession for medical patients with a card. This is the only reference to 6 purchased ounces, however in two other areas of the same section it correctly states that 3 times the recreational limit aka 3 ounces are the maximum purchase limits for medical patients. Same “compliant products” chapter Pg 4 section C Article 1 & Pg 5 section E Article 3 both say “Concertation” when they are meant to say “Concentration”. Same chapter pg 4 Section D Article 3 is meant to say servings per container, it currently says serving.

The questions were wildly open ended at time and left room for questioning the validity of some answers. However, I learned a lot from the course.
Good materials and great videos
Some of the information is dated, and a lot of the questions seemed to be off topic or irrelevant to the section. As a dramatic example, if it were a topic about Benjamin Franklin, it would ask in the quiz “So how often did George Washington need to replace his teeth?”
Some just seemed to never be covered in the topic, and if it is, it was an EXTREMELY insignificant detail.

The course was great! Arguably Roger Adams of the USA was the first to discover and isolate THC for the Federal Bereau of Narcotics in the 1940’s, which could have been a cool tid-bit, but I understand why the course focused on Mechoulam, as he was the first to accurately picture and diagram the molecule’s chemical structure.

Over all I find the course to be useful. I understand the course was designed for multiple states to be able to utilize the program. However, the details were added to include Washington’s Laws, why not add the laws regarding testing? In my experience – 7 years in medical cannabis – medical patients are very ignorant on laws effecting them as a whole, and what laws are effecting their medicine. I think the Testing and Understanding How to Read a test result, could have been more detailed. One of the test questions asked “what is THE most used type of testing used to determine cannabis results,” it provides four options, Two Chromatography choices. The reading did not specify which was more popular, just that both types were used. In addition it provides the equation to calculate THC Total. It does not do a great job at explaining why this equation is used. Simply that it is. This and the HIPPA section could be more detailed. How about adding “Do not discuss ailments shared by patients with anyone besides the patient with out consent of the patient. PERIOD.” Or “Do not approach patients in public, let them approach you, as they may not want people to know they use cannabis.”

I actually learned a lot throughout the course. I wasn’t a fan of the videos.
Very effective way of learning. I personally liked the pictures and graphs. It helped me grasp the knowledge a little bit easier than just staring at words. I could connect what I just read with the picture provided.
One of your questions in the 11th module quiz section was missing its question. There was simply a statement, followed by “choose the correct answer…” I had used context clues from the answers provided to conclude what the correct response was. The course was otherwise well-executed.
This course was very well versed and I am very confident that I am on my way to being the best medical marijuana consultant I can be.
I wish there were more videos on the scientific way that thc and cbd react to our system.
The videos were very instructive, and made learning the materials a lot easier.
I would like to know more specifics on the producer side of things and how they choose to grow with either pesticides, beneficial insects/plants, or organic pesticides like mineral teas and citric acid. How can a patient choose brands that are healthier for them.
There were a couple of quiz questions that could’ve been answered with more than one answer or didn’t make sense what they were asking. Other than that, great!
Overall Excellent! Glad went thru MM411. Very thorough, while allowing you to go at your own pace. Subjective phrasing at times, felt like trick questions. i.e; The part where it is suggested (not mandatory) to pull the customer over to a more private spot to discuss in the lesson. The answer was mandatory however in the exam. I’m guessing not every store has that kind of space? These are just things that could be fine-tuned.

An update to information is recommended, especially in regards to the industrial hemp laws.
Since I have already been working as a budtender for over two years, there was a lot of information that I already knew. I wished I had this training right away! So I wished this had been more detailed. At points it was repetitive and I wish there was new information in place of saying the same thing. An example is the explanation of how the cannabis and opioid receptors work differently and the ECS prevents addiction. Excited to keep learning! Thanks for being part if it! Also would have like to hear examples on how to implement Styleflexing!

Amazing course, just a few questions on the exams were worded strangely. Over all great and actually taught me about some new subjects.
I really enjoyed the video material included about Raphael Mechoulam! The course overall was really engaging, and I already feel like I have a couple new tools at my disposal — money well spent!

Downloadable articles in section 5 were very dry and hard to understand. I would love a conclusion in layman terms 😛 All of the rest of the coursework summarized and explained concepts clearly.
A few questions were asked in sections before they were actually covered in the course. Luckily, I was able to figure out some of those answers myself. Other than that everything was fantastic and I have learned a lot from this course.
I like this interactive layout, with regular check in quizzes to keep us accountable. Good work.
Some of the videos were long and discussed information not pertinent to cannabis or its history at all. Other then that everything was great.

A lot of the questions could be open to interpretation.
The open ending wording on exam questions were more than tricky. Some of them I didn’t know what the question asked.
There are a few hard to read questions, most notably the question regarding long-term effects of cannabis abuse. Otherwise I was very pleased with the informative, thorough, and fair education. It would be nice to have more of an extended video format for information retention as I started and stopped this course load more frequently than I would have liked, and a charming host with threading videos would have planted me much more invested.
Everything was wonderful with the exception of the video playback as it required me to constantly empty my cookies and site data in order to continue viewing each video.
Some of the videos did not play properly. There were audio problems.
Some of the questions are phrased in a way that triggers an intuitive answer, which may not be the book answer the test is looking for. Other than that, great work!
