Dr. Sanjay Gupta speaks with Global News about the importance of funding scientific research. The CNN chief medical correspondent was in Toronto to speak at the Dinner with Scientists dinner, a fundraising for the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital.

“I’m always looking for opportunities where science can be explained and taught in different ways and there’s a dearth of funding for science I think in many places around the world. So the idea of being able to talk about science to people who appreciate it and help support it is always something I like to do,” he told Global News about his decision to speak at the event.

As one of the Top 10 biomedical research institutes in the world, the LTRI researchers are searching for answers in the fields of diabetes, cancer, mental health, digestive diseases and autoimmune conditions, as well as other areas.

“I think the idea that medicine, science, health, is a big common denominator for people around the world as complicated as the world is, these are things that people understand no matter where you live, no matter what your upbringing is — and it matters to people,” Gupta said.

During his presentation to the hundreds gathered, Gupta also spoke of how he changed his opinion on medical marijuana.  He urged more research needs to be done looking into its benefits instead of harm.  He spoke about Charlotte Figi, whom he met in Colorado. Figi was having up to 300 seizures a week, doctors had tried seven medications, and finally her family decided to try medical marijuana using a cannabis oil, after that Figi has two or three seizure a month.

“But also that some of our great scientific innovations sometimes are sitting right in front of us, we just have to go out and get ’em,” he told Global News before his speech.
