Kimball Township to Regulate Compassion Centers

Kimball Township is expected to address a medical marijuana compassion center Tuesday as a zoning ordinance governing such businesses takes effect.

Township Supervisor Rob Usakowski said officials have not decided what action will be taken against Debra and Jim Amsdill, owners of the Blue Water Compassion Center in the Sawmill Commons strip mall, 4731 Lapeer Road. But, the center — billed as a place where state-licensed medical marijuana patients and caregivers can gather — will be in violation of the new zoning ordinance and will not be grandfathered, he said.

The main problem, Usakowski said, is that the center is across from Landmark Academy, a charter school, and the new ordinance says such centers cannot be within 1,000 feet of establishments including schools, parks and churches. The centers also can’t be within 500 feet of a residential district, which isn’t an issue for the existing business.
