How the Controlled Substance Act Applies to State Law

The federal government regulates drugs through the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) (21 U.S.C. § 811), and does not recognize the difference between medical and recreational use of marijuana. Under federal law, marijuana is considered a Schedule I drug, and has the constitutional authority to prohibit marijuana use for all purposes. Under federal law, enforcement officials may prosecute medical marijuana patients, even if they grow their own and even if they live in a state where medical marijuana use is protected under state law. What does this contradiction between state and federal law mean, and how does the federal Controlled Substances Act apply to individual state laws.
