Weed for Warriors – Cannaball Run Across the Country Campaign for Cannabis

The fight for Veterans’ right to medicate with cannabis

In the United States, more veterans die by suicide when they return home than in combat fighting for their country. And as an estimated 22 veterans take their own life on a daily basis, the Veterans Administration continues to offer them narcotic pharmaceuticals rather than natural remedies as the solution to their ailments, resulting in a suicide epidemic growing out of control.

Amidst the tragedy, there is a cross-country effort underway to raise awareness surrounding the urgent issue of our nation’s heroes right to medicate with medical cannabis and combat the scourge of veteran suicides. The seven-city tour known as the Cannaball Run for Vets is being organized by the Weed for Warriors Project and the team at MagicalButter.com.  According to the Weed for Warriors Project, their sole purpose is “to advocate to the Veteran Affairs Administration on behalf of all Veterans. Founded in 2014, the WFW Project aims to allow Veterans the freedom to use cannabis as a recognized medical alternative to harmful psychiatric drugs without any discrimination or unjust actions against the individual.” MagicalButter.com is known for their diligent work within the cannabis community to bring consistent and top-quality cannabis edibles and infusions to patients everywhere, including their development of an appliance that enables patients to make their own infused butter, oil and tincture.

Each stop on the cross-country tour will feature a 5K run followed by a reception in the evening, where further advocacy, education and networking on behalf of our veterans will take place. Organizers will also be collecting empty pill bottles at each stop from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., where they will deliver the trash bags of empty pill bottles to the steps of the White House on Veterans Day, November 11th.

It is undoubtedly clear that the health and wellness issues facing veterans are immense, with the startling statistics surrounding veteran suicide serving as the cornerstone to the epidemic, while cannabis therapy sits within reach but remains hands-off to veterans. Here we find the multitude of therapeutic benefits of cannabis waiting in the wings to treat both the physical and emotional war traumas suffered by some of our nation’s bravest individuals. From PTSD to chronic pain to traumatic brain injuries, the therapeutic properties of cannabis offer natural remedies for the war wounds too many soldiers carry on their shoulders, minus the deleterious side effects of pharmaceuticals that often compound, rather than combat, the health issues suffered by our veterans.

Indeed, the commonly prescribed and highly addictive pharmaceuticals are oftentimes yet another catalyst for veteran suicides, rather than a cure. And with the aforementioned as the VA’s protocol for treating these ailments, medical cannabis is more than just a new approach, but a necessity. If the current pharmaceutical approach was effective, this issue would not have evolved into such tragic territory with such staggering statistics—where 8,000 vets take their own lives each year.
